James (Jim) Villa is head of platform strategy and operations at Generate Biomedicines, where he spearheads the design, implementation, scaling and overall operational excellence of Generate’s generative biology platform. He owns the strategy development for driving faster and better generate-build-test cycles with continual improvement and learning. Jim leads platform strategy across the machine learning, protein sciences, and medicine teams.

Jim had previous roles in large pharmaceutical and mid-sized biotech companies (GSK and Incyte). At Incyte, he pioneered the role of head of research operations. He worked with the chief scientific officer to optimize and grow the discovery organization while ensuring efficient and ever-improving operations. The role involved initiating, developing, implementing, and leading functions including: operations, strategy development, program management, portfolio management, budgeting and alliance management. During his 13 years at GSK, Jim led a group of scientists in biological reagents and assay development that prosecuted a large number of targets from early discovery to first-time in-human studies. Jim later joined the R&D strategy group where he focused on operations and strategy development for far-ranging areas of R&D. Several major accomplishments during his leadership included bioelectronics business creation, human target validation initiative, and the formation of a platform & capabilities investment board.

Jim holds a PhD from Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine and earned his BS from St. Joseph’s University in Pennsylvania.
